"I've Got the Music In Me"
School of Music and Performance
Program description
Tickling the Ivories - Piano Fundamentals |
It is my belief that Piano is the basic building block to a music program. The chord patterns and melody are more apparent than on any other instrument, including guitar. The piano is where we start. But we don't stop there. |
Piano is the place to start. |
Carrying a Tune in a Bucket - Vocals |
We're not teaching high opera here, but children should learn to sing a tune in tune. |
Solo instruments are next |
Some Melodious Sonnet - Melody Instrument |
I believe that teaching the ability of playing a solo instrument lends to a quicker understanding of melody vs. harmony. These instruments need not be complex or expensive. A recorder, harmonica or penny whistle will suffice. Although, some go orchestral on this one at their election. |

Get your feet ready next! |
Rhythm 'n Motion with Fancy Feet - footwork |
One important aspect of music is rhythm. Without a sense of beat, the music is rough and does not flow. Getting the feet involved sets a permanent pattern of a correct sense of timing. It gets the whole body involved and "in sync" to the music. |

Chord Stacking and Charts - how does it all work? |
Who wants to learn about theories? So we call music theory "chord stacking and charts". We get deep into the internal workings of music and even explore playing with a chord chart as well as by note and rote. |
Every Good Boy Does Fine; C E G Bb |
Making it Up - Song Writing |
In order to know how music really works, it is important to explore writing ones own songs. It takes a complete understanding to be able to pen your own creations. This further cements the knowledge of music gained and fosters an activity a person can take with them throughout live. For advanced students, we will be working with music writing software for printing publishing quality scores
Next up - artificial music and instrumentation |
Cool Waves Synth and Orchestration |
It is really fun to experiement with various sounds and instrumentation available these days. There are literally thousands of different options to choose from now. We will be learning how different sounds are used in orchestrations and choosing our own sounds for our own CD's. |
Making our own CD is next!
Puttin' it Down - Your own Studio Recorded CD |
Nothing can boost a student's confidence and makes music come alive than to perfect their work in a recording. We're not producing major works here, but just three song of the student's choice. However, the album is orchestrated is desired and copies are made for gifts to relatives and friends. And it's recorded in a real working studio. This part of the program is one of the most enjoyable. |
The Gang's all here - next! |
Gettin' it Together - Group Interaction |
As we grow, we will begin putting together a group program as a recital. It will be a production that includes all the parts of the program we have learned throughout the year. |
